Political protests come in many shapes and sizes. From online petitions to real-life rallies, hardly a day goes by without a minority group generously sharing their opinions via megaphone on the steps of Parliament. But Russian political punk-rock band Pussy Riot, are not your average political protestors. In March this year, three female band members stormed Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and performed a ‘punk prayer’ in which they asked Virgin Mary to drive away President Vladimir Putin. The trio were arrested for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred and have been in jail since. Their trial is currently being held, and the deeply politicised Russian judicial system is causing global controversy.
What’s particularly unique about Pussy Riot’s protest – aside from their colourful balaclavas, their energetic dance style and their defiance of a political regime reminiscent of Stalin’s Russia – is their means of communication. The political rockers have cast aside the megaphone, and instead embraced the power of the internet. Their performance was primarily designed to be shared on YouTube, and the video has thus far received 260,000 views. Given that the punk prayer was created for the online environment, it is no surprise that the global response has largely occupied the same medium.
Amnesty International has established www.freepussyriot.org to raise awareness and garner international support to release the detained members of Pussy Riot. As well as collating news and videos relevant to the court trial, Amnesty set up a legal defence fund so the public can donate to the women’s cause. Contributions can range from $5 to $500, and at the time this piece was written, the fund stood at a total of $19,865 USD – just $135 USD short of their goal!
Additionally, Pussy Riot’s political song has become a hot topic in the twitterverse, the blogosphere, and every other social media environment you can think of a bad pun for. It seems the freedom of the internet offers the perfect juxtaposition to the unjust partisanship of the Russian courts. The husband of one of the detained band members has been furiously tweeting @freepussyriot throughout the trial, contributing to the unprecedented media coverage of the hearing. Further, personal blogs like Richard Thomas Reilly have commented on the punk prayer from a political and humanitarian perspective, while musicandting offers an example of musician camaraderie at the local level.
The loud response from the blogging community is to be expected, as most bloggers – and I don’t claim to be the exception – see themselves as righteous champions of free speech. More importantly than the various opinions and ideas being expressed though, is the fact that Pussy Riot has a place in public discourse. At the time of Stalin’s reign, the repression of anti-establishment protestors was a swift and brutal operation, largely carried out away from the international eye. The online realm has shed a blinding light on international injustice, and opened the door for global observation and comment in cases such as these. While the growing Western liberal support for the imprisoned band members will not likely impact the biased nature of the court hearing, it will send a very clear message to President Putin. The world is closely watching his every move, and the voices of those he rules are louder and more mobile than ever.
A real eye-opener – I do hope their cause is met with more consistent support that that of other recent clicktivist phenomena (Kony et al)
Clearly, I’m living under a rock…I hadn’t even heard about this! But now I’m off to find the video and do some Twitter research — thanks for the heads up!
Mr Putin had indirectly given reprieve to the Trio — may well take good lesson from the much lighter sentence from the leniency!!
It also helps that they’re a punk rock band that look cool – they appeal to the kids on the Twitter and such. I’m not saying that’s a bad thing: I reckon they’re probably making some people think about human rights who haven’t before, even when they’ve heard about atrocities.
Also, I know the internet isn’t the exclusive domain of young people. But I think young people are probably driving the Pussy Riot campaign.
muito bom ^^
I’m enamored with these brave women — heroines in our time! Thank you for broad-ening our world view and congratulations on making freshly pressed!

This is a fascinating post about Pussy Riot’s public prayer to free Russia from Putin. It has links to a video showing their prayer/performance, and thence to a video on the police reacting to a street protest of the arrest and charging of three of the group’s members.
Lovely Post!
Adieu, scribbler
Vlad has been a blessing / is a blessing for
RUSSIA its people one should be more in a
balanced approach to an political situation.
I do not say that one should love Vlad / but
that he has earned as deserving of respect.
The girls for their act (which was wrong) it
offending many people / were imprisoned
and my opinion as the great majority they
having paid for their crime /and should be
given their freedom / as the time spent in
prison being a fair price they having paid.
Let us not use such a situation as being
a means in bringing the downfall of Vlad
as a means of anti RUSSIA propaganda.
Let’s look at situation in the USA where
where politics so corrupt one’s vote but
having little worth / politicians bought as
sold by those in having the wealth to do
so / thus serve a agenda of the wealthy.
A situation presenty a USA bankrupt due
fighting illegal wars / which left the social
structure of the nation in collapse /being
starved of funding /while $billions wasted
in pointless wars which achieved nothing
but to bankrupt nation /putting millions in
poverty / made even worse where those
whom raised their voice in their peaceful
protests / called terrorists / by the media
a 24 / 7 govt public brainwashing media.
Thus let’s have a balanced approach to
Vlad unto RUSSIA it’s people lets not be
unfair where using wrongful propaganda.
There being occasions where nations in
having kept an politician in place where
there official time over / it be rare but its
been done by western nations it now be
done by RUSSIA it.s people whom wish
to keep Vlad presently in political office.
Fantastic post. It’s always great to read a high quality, fact based personal blog post. I particularly enjoyed your line, “The loud response from the blogging community is to be expected, as most bloggers – and I don’t claim to be the exception – see themselves as righteous champions of free speech.” You really summed up the majority of blogging voices. Unfortunately, these “champions of free speech” aren’t always worth the time it takes to peer down a page. And you never really know what you’re getting into when shuffling through blogs or Freshly Pressed. But finding quality posts such as this one makes searching for the gold very worthwhile. Well done!
Just missing these facts about this group…. http://www.lifesitenews.com/mobile/news/western-media-concealing-facts-about-female-rock-bands-desecration-of-russi
Have we really come to a time when we can call this acceptable free speech?! It’s terrifying.
Excellent link, thank you for sharing. It’s good to get opposing viewpoints and to fully understand both sides of the story. It sounds like Pussy Riot aren’t as well liked in their homeland as they are here in the West.
OMGosh, that. is. crazy. I hope they get enough attention to create some major waves!
you gurls are ROCK…..
Another cool group to support in their struggle against oppression is Anaheim Riot. They’ve actually been shot at for public protest.
“…three female band members stormed Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour…”
Which Cathedral, incidentally, contains halls that are rented out for corporate functions, and also food-joints, jewellery-merchants, a car-wash…
More than three Pussy Rioters stormed it but only three of them got caught.
“The political rockers have cast aside the megaphone, and instead embraced the power of the internet.”
Well, it’s not an either/or thing, they’re pretty good at shouting into megaphones too. For more Pussy Riot brilliance check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZUhkWiiv7M – panic on the streets of Moscow! – and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmyZbJpYV0I&feature=BFa&list=HL1343841446 where they’re serenading political-prisoners in the somewhat ominously named “Detention Centre One.”
I recently read something about this somewhere — skimmed really. I didn’t know it was an actual band and that they’ve been in prison since March?! Wow.
Thanks for sharing.
All other facts aside, the idea that people in America think the women had every right to perform such a horrific act in as HOLY and SACRED a place as inside the church and in front of the altar is horrifying to me! They don’t have to be in agreement with Putin or Patriarch Kyrill, but keep it out of the church where people turn for holy prayer. I bet if a religious group spoke against Obama somewhere public everyone would be in uproar.
Uproar must not equal imprisonment.
I know they wouldn’t be imprisoned but as someone commented below, these women should not be made into heros.

I love Pussy Riot! Those girls have guts. I also like how WordPress changed the title of this post on the FP page. :p
“has become a hot topic in the twitterverse, the blogosphere, and every other social media environment you can think of a bad pun for.” lol.
Why no one in the Western media mentions the fact that there were other, rather provocative and digusting acts by these, so called punk-rockers as carrying a frozen chicken out of supermarket in their vaginas and video-exposed orgy in a museum? Why make them heros? Only because they oppose Putin? “Regime reminiscent of Stalin’s Russia” – oh my gosh, you haven’t been to Russia after the USSR, have you? Americans are so quick to support anyone that is anti-Putin, that they would probably support Ben Laden if he was this way. Jeese, you’re brainwashed, people.
here here!
It’s very difficult to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes. Totally empathize with folks whose religious sentiments were hurt but it is an unfortunate fact that women have been enduring a system that works against them for ages. It’s not really about Putin per se.

They have deliberately wound up not just the politicians but the church which was rebuilt as part of Perestroika, so though the church may well be going along wiht Putin, there is genuine outrage at what they did. It is hard for us to imagine how offended people are by this. But it is about free speech. they should have been fined and let go

I do consider all the concepts you’ve offered for your post. They’re really convincing and can certainly work.
Still, the posts are very brief for novices. May you please extend them a bit from next time?
Thanks for the post.
It is an unusual triangular shaped castle with two moats
and surrounded by marshland. If you are looking for restored castles in Scotland, then make that
a priority. Janet Douglas, who is Glamis’ “grey lady” (every good medieval castle has either a lady in gray or a lady in white) is said to roam the ancient walls, and the Ogilvie family’s strange, macabre legacy is spoken of also.
Pretty component of content. I simply stumbled upon your website and in accession capital to claim that I get in fact
